How 3D Printing Can Elevate your next 3D Sculpture

We’ve just gotten a 3D Printer here at the office, and it’s already revolutionizing how we approach the creation of new sculptures and statues! Usually, it can be difficult to approach the level of detail we’re looking for with certain shapes and contours by hand. Oftentimes, we have to find case by case solutions to these problems, which can come with their own downsides to deal with, and unexpected costs to us. But with the ability to perfectly print the shape we need, this is an issue of the past.

Moreover, it’s opened up a variety of new ways to elevate our work beyond what we were capable before. We can make transparent prints- shapes that allow light through them to bring the sculpture to life. With a clear coat on top, you can make a volcanic rock overflow with magma, or even make a stationary water feature. The possibilities open up dramatically!

These longer, thinner shapes are especially difficult to make with foam alone. The thinnest parts don’t hold up well with stress, and break easily. This can make problems both in the creation process, and also down the line for clients in moving sculptures from place to place. Not to mention, to make these particular shapes hollow would be incredibly difficult, perhaps even requiring additional tools that we don’t have on hand. In 3D Printing the pieces, and attaching them. we’re able to make thinner shapes that hold up under more pressure. We can even make it hollow!

These basic principles may not sound like a lot, but it truly opens up the door to make more interesting designs that blend mediums like foam and plastic to create more interesting designs, while maintaining a sturdy, reusable sculpture for businesses that can be brought to trade shows, expos, and other events. From shapes that were once impossible, to small and precise designs, the door has opened to make more ideas a reality.

This process also has us producing less waste than some of our traditional sculpture making methods. With foam sculpting, we typically find ourselves inundated with heaps of scraps. While we dispose of this waste responsibly, the approach of using more 3D printed components leaves us with far less waste than before.

We are also looking into some methods to recycle and reuse parts like supports for the printing process so that it may be used again, even further reducing our company’s waste.

Responsible practices like these help us make a better future for everyone- one where artistic dreams thrive.

Look at the distinct level of detail we’re able to achieve with the prints as well! The sharp teeth, the long tendrils, the gentle creases- these can be extremely difficult to achieve with foam alone. Not impossible, mind you, but a mistake on foam like that could be costly in both money and time. The consistency that 3D Printing offers is an immense help, and ensures we can get it to you in a timely, and cost efficient manner.

One might note the ridges along the outside of the print. It’s an unfortunate, and well known issue with 3D Printing. The texture can be difficult to avoid- but luckily we even have a solution for this. In our foam sculptures, we always use a urethane sealant to ensure durability and protection in the long run. We’ve found a similar solution here- XTC 3D. In addition to sealing and protecting the prints with a hard, clear exterior shell, it also undergoes an exothermic reaction as it cools, heating up rapidly. This heat is enough to marginally melt the outside of the print, erasing many, if not all of those pesky ridges. The result is a smooth outer appearance that can make the print last from event to event!
