We put a lot of time and care into the creation of our 3D Sculptures and Props. It takes a lot of time, effort, and equipment to make sure a client’s vision can come to life. The sculptures we put so much into need to last a long time- through moving, through trade show exhibitions, and even the elements of the outdoors themselves. These statues go through a lot at the end of the day, and its important that it can hold up to the test of time.
Luckily, we’ve found a cost effective solution that I’d like to tell you a little bit more about, one that we use in all of our products. It helps us, and you, save more money, without sacrificing the durability needed to keep your vision alive through every show, every event, and everything in between.
Urethane Spray Coating!
This is what we normally have after shaping and seaming. There’s several problems with using this as it is. Most of this is just foam, with those seams down the middle covering the cracks where foam pieces were brought together. Both are prone to breaking, scuffing, or getting roughed up, even by relatively small things. Beyond that, the piece just looks rough on its own, with small imperfections that look messy. All in all, this alone is just an unfinished product, plain and simple. It demands uniformity, stability, and protection to truly round it out. To give it those things, we take it outside to our spray tent, and give it its first coat of sprayable urethane.
What is our urethane spray though? Well, think of it as a kind of chemical resin. It typically comes in two parts which, once combined, quickly set into a hard coating of durable material that is water, temperature, and UV resistant. This makes it an ideal sealant for our sculptures, which often may be exposed to the elements for prolonged periods of time, or are often moved from place to place.
This is an example of a freshly treated piece of a sculpture we helped make. See how that rough, foam surface has all but vanished? All that’s left is a smooth, uniform piece that’s still lightweight, but also extremely durable. It’s like we’ve taken the foam and frozen it in time to keep it fresh for you. Now mind you, this surface is also still able to be manipulated in some small ways. If the urethane has pooled, or bunched up in certain spots, we still have ways to alter the sculpture or prop to ensure uniformity across the piece, and a smooth finish that lasts. It’s also perfectly paintable- though we usually apply a layer of primer to ensure complete coverage across the piece, and an additional sealant to keep the paint fresh and bright.
With a sealed 3D Prop or Sculpture such as this, you’ll have a piece for conventions, events, booths, and anything else you may use it at for years to come without damage from spills, moving, or other common occurrences like weather! That reusability means more money in your pocket, or more for your business!
